Villa’s Young Lions Progress to Youth Cup Semis

Aston Villa’s youth setup has come up trumps once again this season having brought through the likes of Ciaran Clark, Marc Albrighton, Barry Bannan and Nathan Baker in recent years. Tony McAndrew’s side toppled Middlesbrough 3-1 yesterday in the Youth Cup quarter-finals, showing signs of continued progression from the academy at Villa Park. Captain Daniel Johnson gave Villa a first-half opener, leading by example throughout. A well taken goal from Graham Burke shortly after half-time gave Villa a two goal cushion before Charlie Wyke pulled one back for Boro. However, victory was sealed when Matthew Waters put past his own keeper to make it 3-1 and ensure Villa progressed to the semi-finals.

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed the game, the kids were far better than Middlesborough, but unlike the first team the day before made there superiority pay!

One player who did catch my eye was the midfielder, I think no 4, a bid coloured lad with a double barrelled name, very reminiscent of Ian Taylor. Johnson improved as the game wore on, and the ex Arsenal kid looked impressive. The two centre backs certainly have the size for their positions, would like to see them tested with a pacy centre forward though.

A good team performance, but they do lack a “general” pulling the strings, a la Bannan and Gardner over the last couple of years.
