Aston Villa are thought to be interested in bringing Celtic full-back Emilio Izaguirre to Villa Park after the Honduran caught the eye of the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool earlier in the season. The 24-year-old is seen as an ideal replacement for Stephen Warnock, who reportedly held unsuccessful talks to repair ties with Gerard Houllier this week. The left-back has impressed sufficiently in Scotland to be awarded a SPL Player of the Year nomination and Villa have strong connections to recipients of the gong in recent seasons. Celtic’s Stiliyan Petrov and Shaun Maloney both received the accolade before joining Villa, with the latter having returned, while Carlos Cuellar won the prize for Rangers the season before signing under Martin O’Neill. Izaguirre has only been at the Scottish leaders for this season having signed from everybody’s second favourite team CD Motagua Tegucigalpa in his native Honduras. This season he has played 33 games for Celtic, scoring once and setting up 7 goals from defence in a backline that has shipped in just 14 goals whilst he has featured, keeping 16 clean sheets in the process. A fee of as much as £8m has been touted.
