Villa to Fight Liverpool (As Ever) for Swiss Shaqiri

19-year-old FC Basel winger Xherdan Shaqiri has attracted glances from some of Europe’s top clubs with Villa showing an interest though the bright lights of Liverpool are also calling for the young winger. Despite his age, the midfielder’s prospects are clear and he has become the most sought after man in Swiss football, appearing 10 times at senior international level and having already opened his account, against England in the European qualifier, a 1-3 home defeat for the Swiss in which Villa striker Darren Bent also netted his first international strike. In 21 games in the Swiss Axpo Super League he has scored twice and assisted 4 times, but he has also already notched in the Champions League qualifiers and the tournament proper against AS Roma. Shaqiri became a regular in the Basel side last season at the age of just 18, scoring 4 and setting up 5 in his debut league season. The youngster is valued at around £7m but the price tag has failed to put off the likes of Villareal, Zenit St. Petersburg, Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund from around Europe. This one will obviously be a link to the fact that Ashley Young could well be leaving come the summer and I don’t know much about him other than the stats I’ve looked up and the fact that I bought him on last season’s Football Manager!
