I write these articles about new manager’s coming in with no confidence any more! However, Wigan have officially given Roberto Martinez permission to talk to Aston Villa (as long as he’s home before midnight), though chairman Dave Whelan claims that he would be very surprised if the 37-year-old took the job, despite flying back from holiday for talks.Good to see that Whelan has confirmed that Villa’s request and dealings with Wigan have been totally above board for the manager, who is now as low as 8/13 on to take up Houllier’s vacated hot seat. The odds have been getting around more than a desperate Essex girl but it appears, touch wood, that this one will stick!
Yesterday Rafa Benitez came through as a huge favourite and we all learnt that the phrase ‘Sky Sports understands’ doesn’t actually mean a lot. The Spaniard was subsequently ruled out of the role, with some saying he rebuffed the club over transfer budget demands. Long-time least favourite amongst the fans, Steve McLaren also slipped down the odds after it was confirmed that he was sounded out as more of a last resort than anything.
I’m not going to write what Martinez could bring to Villa etc. and what to expect in the transfer window until the deal is done as I have learned my lesson from the Hughes debacle, but this one could be completed very soon so keep your eyes peeled! By the way, if the move does come through, I’m personally in the pro category, though I know there are many cons out there! UTV!
