Despite manager Alex McLeish stating that Villa would only make one more top signing this summer as things stand, the club were today linked with Lyon midfielder Miralem Pjanic and are reportedly in a battle with Spurs and Lazio for his signature.
The 21-year-old Bosnian has been tipped as one of Europe’s hottest prospects for a few years now but is yet to really hit the big time having failed to nail down at regular starting berth at Lyon last term.
The validity of the link is jeopardised by Villa’s current stance over transfers, with a winger the top priority to replace Downing. Pjanic plays in a more central role but would undoubtedly add depth to the squad after losing Reo-Coker earlier in the summer, though the youngster is more of an attacking influence.
The Bosnia international completed the 90 minutes on just 5 occasions in Ligue 1 last term having started 16 games. He netted three times in the league and set up a further 2 goals.
Other notable stats from last season include a decent pass success rate of 83%, with only Petrov of the current Villa ranks scoring higher (86%). He also made 1 key pass a game on average along with 0.7 crosses and 1.4 long balls a match.
