The Mirror have reported that Villa are fighting it out with Sunday’s opponent Newcastle to complete the capture of West Ham prospect Jordan Spence. The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has caught the eye during a loan spell with Championship side Bristol City, earning a call up to the England Under-21 set-up in the process. The London club are still hoping to tie the youngster down to a new deal but if they cannot, any respective buyer will not have to pay a transfer fee, though compensation will be given to West Ham due to his age. Spence is primarily a centre-back but can play along the back-line. Though he is yet to play for the Under-21s, he has been a regular in the international youth set-up, appearing 41 times combined for the Under-17s, 18s and 19s, scoring two goals in the youngest bracket. He has played 5 times for Bristol this term, picking up one assist having enjoyed a spell in the same league with Scunthorpe the season before, playing 11 times. In City’s 5 games in which he has played, the league strugglers have won 4, losing only to second placed Norwich 3-1 and conceding just 2 goals in the victories combined. He has just one senior cap for the Hammers, making his league debut last season as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
