Villa Gaga for Gago Despite Lack of Manager?

Reports have suggested that Villa are still pursuing targets despite lacking a manager following Gerard Houllier’s departure last week, with Real Madrid’s Fernando Gago one of those touted to replace the released Nigel Reo-Coker.The Argentine defensive midfielder has fallen way down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho for the Spanish giant and is keen on a move from the club to secure first team action. The 25-year-old is behind the likes of Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Lassana Diarra in the centre midfield slots at the Bernabau and the club have also recently signed Nuri Sahin, who was also believed to be a target for Villa.

Gago made just 1 league start last season, appearing 3 times from the substitutes bench. In his short playing time he had a fantastic pass success rate of 93% in the 99 minutes he played. He was phased out by the signing of Xabi Alonso and made just 14 league starts last campaign. His best season at the club came in the 2008/09 season when he played 26 games and picked up an impressive 7 assists.
