Villa Fans Rate Friedel as Villa’s Best Defensive Force

And the award goes to…..well I already said it in the title. Villa Blog fans have voted veteran stopper Brad Friedel as the team’s best defensive force this season in a close fought contest which saw the 39-year-old, 40 tomorrow, receive 38.5% of the vote, pipping the four other candidates to the post. It was revealed yesterday that the keeper was delaying talks with the club until the end of the season with interest mounting from former club Liverpool, as well as Tottenham and West Brom in the Premier League. Villa have repeatedly put off negotiations due to the player’s advancing years and in doing so may risk losing their number 1 for next season. The club were understandably cautious of offering new terms to a number of players due to the club’s previously insecure league status. However, constant hesitation over offering a new deal based on Friedel’s age isn’t thought to have sat too well with the American, though he is still widely expected to stay on at Villa Park next season. Despite this, Friedel has been one of the club’s top performers again this season and has shown no decline in fitness or sharpness for that matter, starting all of Villa’s 37 league games this term. The former Blackburn man’s closest contender in the vote was youngster Ciaran Clark, who 28.75% voted for ahead of the likes of James Collins, Luke Young and Richard Dunne
