When Villa escaped signing Wayne Bridge on loan in January I drew a huge sigh of relief having heard his £90k a week wages but it now appears that the club are ready to rekindle their interest in the City defender. The left-back role has been highlighted as a weakness of the Villa side following Stephen Warnock’s obvious fall out with the management and Houllier is keen to bolster his defensive ranks after a dreadful season in that regard. In my opinion Wayne Bridge is definitely not the way to go and a pretty awful loan spell at relegated West Ham reaffirms my belief, or lack there of.
The former England international is now 30 and in Luke Young the club have a far better full back who has proven he is more than capable in a left sided role, as did centre back Ciaran Clark earlier in the season. Kyle Walker is set to rejoin Tottenham which would allow Young to switch back to the right but if Villa can get a better right back for their money than a lefty, then I would suggest that they do that, rather than blow wages on pretty average, ageing and overpaid ‘stars’.
Bridge will all but certainly leave Man City this summer, and in a cut price deal with his contract expiring next year, but his wages are far more off-putting than any price tag so I would hope these reports are untrue. Who would you like to see fill the left or right back voids? Are the likes of Eric Lichaj, Chris Herd and Ciaran Clark ready to step up next season?
