Villa and Liverpool to Battle for Diego

Aston Villa are thought to be fighting it out with Liverpool, not for the first time, for Wolfsburg midfielder Diego after the Brazilian admitted that it is his dream to play in England having been told he can leave the German club after failing to show up for the former Bundesliga champions final game of the campaign.

The 26-year-old has been one of the German league’s best players for a number of years, sandwiching a disappointing one season stint with Serie A giants Juventus. He joined Wolfsburg in 2009/10 on a four-year deal but has since fallen out of favour at the club due to his voluntary absence on the closing day of last season.

In 30 appearances in the league last term the playmaker netted 6 times and set up a further 9, completing 74% of his passes. He attempted 1.5 shots per game and a fantastic team high of 2.9 key passes a match, 0.6 higher than Villa’s best last season, Ashley Young. He also completed another team high of 2.8 successful dribbles a game, again significantly higher than any Villa player from the last term.

According to Sky Sports, the Brazilian has been quoted as saying:

“At this moment I desperately want to play in England. There are talks with several clubs just starting.

“It is way too early to admit my destination. Anyway, it would be perfect to feature in the Premiership in the future.

“I will definitely consider all offers in a careful manner. It is my dream to play in the Premiership. I am looking forward to getting a solution.”
