The Daily Mail claim that, despite being unable to agree terms with the youngster in January, Guieda Fofana is back on Gerard Houllier’s radar, though the French boss may have to battle off interest from Bordeaux for his compatriot. The defensive midfielder is one of the hottest prospects in France and joins a string of upcoming players to have been likened to Patrick Vieira in his hay-day. A fee of around £1m was touted to have been accepted by Le Havre for the 19-year-old in December but that figure is likely to rise with interest mounting in the France Under-20 captain. After holding talks with French under-19 captain Gueida Fofana, Gerard Houllier has revealed that a deal is unlikely having seemingly disagreed on a wage package for the youngster. Fofana is hotly tipped to be a big talent in his native France and has been touted as the next Patrick Vieira during his time at Ligue 2 side Le Havre. It appeared that Houllier had stolen a march on a number of prospected rival bidders in agreeing a fee for the 19-year-old but a deal now seems dead in the water. Fellow Frenchman and senior team international centre-back Adil Rami is also a no-go for Houllier after the 25-year-old has apparently agreed terms with Valencia. A bid in excess of £10m may have put Villa off making a stronger effort to contest for Rami’s signature who will join the Spanish side at the end of the current season, where he will continue to turn out for Ligue 1 side Lille. In more positive news it seems a deal to bring MLS star Omar Cummings to the club on a short term loan deal could soon be in the offing. The striker, who is equally adept in a wide role, flew to England for a trial with the Midlands club with a view to a loan deal being agreed during the off season of the American league. If a deal is completed, pending a work permit being granted, the 28-year-old will join until March. To view Houllier’s comments on the potential deals for Fofana and Cummings, Read more

Gerard Houllier is looking to the future and hopes to sign French hot prospect Guieda Fofana from Le Havre. The 19-year-old is highly rated in France and it seems Houllier is familiar with the youngster from his role with the FFF. Fofana impressed whilst captaining France at the European Under-19 Championships last summer and has represented his country from Under-16 level, recently obtaining 2 caps for the Under-20s. Villa are looking to tie up a deal for the defensive midfielder in January with a host of European clubs holding an interest. At just 18, Fofana was a mainstay in the Le Havre first team picking up 30 appearances and has been also obtained 17 caps this season for the Ligue 2 club scoring 1 goal to add to the solitary goal from his previous campaign. Unsurprisingly he is rarely amongst the goals though he has netted 7 times for the various French academy sides that he has played.
