Rovers Want Warnock/Collins in Samba Swap

Rumours suggest that the recent injury to Stephen Warnock is not merely a coincidence and that the left-back may soon be on his way out of the club. Although he has not been at the forefront of the supposed backroom rift with the management some sources do state that he is not a great influence in the matter and could soon be sold. The issue has aroused the interest of former employer’s Blackburn, who Villa have once again drawn in a cup competition, this time the 4th round of the FA Cup (could be better, could be worse). Rovers’ new manager Steve Kean is reportedly keen (how many times is that surname going to be used regarding to transfer interests!) to bring the full back to the club which saved him from Gerard Houllier at Liverpool. Suggestions have ultimately been made that Warnock could be used as a makeweight for supposed Villa target Christopher Samba. One rumour stated that Blackburn were looking to complete a straight swap for Warnock and fellow defender James Collins in exchange. In my opinion Warnock has been poor this season and can go if the suggestions that he no longer wants to be at the club are true. I also feel that Samba is a great defender and would be a fantastic signing but not worth two first-team regulars, especially as James Collins has been somewhat of a mainstay and quite possibly Villa’s most consistent centre-half. What would you consider to be a fair exchange deal, be it a straight swap or player plus cash offer, and do you feel Samba could sure up Villa’s leaky backline?

Collins Joins Long List of Could Be ‘Leavers’

Centre-back James Collins has become the latest Villa player to be linked away from the club in a supposed impending cull of the current squad by manager Gerard Houllier. The rumours regarding the Frenchman are somewhat surprising considering the 27-year-old is the only man of Villa’s backline yet to fall out of favour at some stage with the boss. Despite this, the likes of Stoke and Blackburn have been linked with an interest in Collins which one would normally say would be a step backward for the defender but this season has seen Villa slump to 18th place after finishing 6th in the previous 3 campaigns under Martin O’Neill. Tony Pulis, who has also recently denied a link to Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland, is supposedly a long-standing admirer of the no-nonsense centre-back but he apparently faces competition from Blackburn. Collins only joined the club at the start of last season in a deal believed to be worth around £5m but skysports sources have revealed that the player is one of those who could be offloaded under the new management. The Rovers link is an interesting one after Houllier was recently reported to following the progress of Christopher Samba after the defender handed in a transfer request under new manager Steve Kean. A swap deal had been touted to include Curtis Davies but it now seems that Kean would prefer Collins in exchange. If this is the case then the suggested £5m kicker fee to support the supposed Davies switch would surely be cut with Collins unlikely to have lost much of his £5m value after an impressive first season for the club. Would you welcome a swap deal for Samba and how much, if any would you suggest that Villa would need to fork out along with the Welshman.

After the 3-3 draw with Chelsea saw Villa slump to the worst defensive record in the league, worse than West Ham, worse than Wigan!, Gerard Houllier is believed to be keen to bolster his backline blunders. The Frenchman has been linked to a number of defenders in the past, with 3 more now thought to be on his radar. A loan deal has been touted for young Tottenham full-back, currently on loan at QPR, Kyle Walker. The right back has impressed during loan spells to Championship clubs including Sheffield United as well as in his role with the England Under-21s. Basel’s Iranian born full-back Behrang Safari, who plays for the Swedish national side, has also attracted interest. The 25-year-old is rumoured to have been tracked by a number of clubs following eye-catching displays for the Swiss side. Finally and perhaps most encouragingly, the club have also been linked with a player-plus-cash deal for want away Blackburn centre half Christopher Samba. The giant defender has been a mainstay in the Rovers set-up for a number of seasons and is also vice-captain in the absence of Ryan Nelsen. It has been suggested that Houllier is willing to offer Curtis Davies in exchange for Samba, along with a reported £5m kicker. To read profiles on the three linked players click here
