Brad Friedel is being linked with a return to Liverpool having yet to sign a new contract extension at Aston Villa. Assistant manager Gary McAllister claims that the club want the veteran to stay but have taken his advancing age into consideration in their offer. Midlands rivals West Brom and Tottenham are also keen from the Premier League according to reports and of the three I would suggest that a move to Spurs may be the most likely, to replace the laughing stock that is Heurelho Gomes, though I think he will stay on at Villa. Liverpool have been sweating on the future of keeper Pepe Reina but the Spaniard pledged his commitment to the club under Kenny Dalglish and looks to be staying. Despite this the newly recalled Liverpool boss is thought to be keen on taking the 39-year-old, to be 40 on Wednesday, to Anfield as cover. The Reds will undoubtedly be able to offer better wages but Friedel doesn’t seem like the money grabbing type at all and will be very completely new to warming a bench having started every league game for Villa since signing. The American’s agent Tony McGill spoke to SkySports;
“I will be holding talks with Brad next week, once the season has finished and we will then go over his options.
“At the moment he is focused on Villa’s final game, but also the birth of his next child which is imminent.
“I have read the newspaper speculation, but we are not going to talk about any clubs until the season has finished.”
