Houllier to Kick Off Against Blackburn

Today it was confirmed that this Saturday’s home tie with Bolton will be caretaker manager, Kevin MacDonald’s last in terms of first team duties. Aston Villa announced an agreement with Gerard Houllier in a press conference last Friday but it was unknown when he would be enabled to take the reins. It has now been established that the Frenchman’s first game as manager will be against Blackburn Rovers in the Carling Cup.

Houllier has now arranged an accord with the French Football Federation on his departure from the position of Technical Director. The new manager will work with the team following the weekend’s clash with Bolton and prepare them for battle against Rovers in the Cup once again. A club statement read;

“It has been confirmed Gerard Houllier will take charge of the team after the Bolton game. He will be in charge for the Carling Cup game against Blackburn Rovers next Wednesday.”

The two sides met last season in the same competition at the Semi-Final stages which eventually saw Villa progress to a Wembley comeback. The tie produced a quite outstanding second leg last year at Villa Park with Villa coming out on top, 6-4. The game was a memorable night in the club’s recent history and may well prove to be another one with Houllier up against his first challenge.
