Houllier Set to Stay on as Villa Manager Pending Test Results

Reports suggest that if medical tests confirm Gerard Houllier’s health is fit enough to stay as Villa manager than that is what will happen at Villa Park this summer.

Speculation had mounted that the Frenchman would be forced to step down after a second heart scare saw the 63-year-old hospitalized, leaving the reigns to Gary McAllister for the clubs run in. The caretaker manager has insisted that, as far as he knows, Houllier will be returning for pre-season training in July having made an apparent successful recovery. Many believe that the Villa manager should consider his health first and give up the manager’s job ahead of next season and his wife was rumoured to be one of them!

It now appears that Randy Lerner is set to rubber-stamp the boss’ return in a meeting early next week. Those who want Villa out have suggested that the former Liverpool manager’s resignation due to health reasons could be a healthy solution for all parties concerned in that Houllier would not be getting sacked after a below par first term and the club would not be labelled as impatient in releasing the new manager just a season after choosing him as the man to lead Villa forward.

McAllister stated: “Gerard is very good. He is in fine form. We are seeing more and more of him. He is up and about.

“We have had lunch, we’ve been for dinner. He’s not driving or anything like that. He’s obviously got a driver.

“But every indication, and all the things he is saying to me and other members of staff, is that he wants to be back here and he wants to be back in full-time work.

“He is just preparing for July 7 when we come back for pre-season training.”
