Houllier Reveals Owen Interest

On a day that Michael Owen let it be known of his growing frustration of sitting on the Old Trafford bench, the new Villa manager has admitted an interest. Houllier worked with Owen in his time at Anfield and coached the striker through the best spell of his career. The 30 year old has been crocked with injuries for some time now but is fit again and looking to secure first team football.

It is thought that Houllier is keen on a reunion with the England international and the Frenchman confessed to holding a longstanding admiration of the Man Utd player.

“He has always been in my thoughts; I like him, as a player and a man.”

The new manager at Villa also quashed reports that Owen was past his best and not fit enough for the Premier League.

“I went to Liverpool on September 4 for Jamie Carragher’s testimonial, and I saw Michael play a half of football. He still has the legs for it.”

Owen had stated today that he was becoming unsettled with life as a back up striker to Berbatov and Rooney at United and a move for Owen could be ideal for Houllier.

“You can only do your best and prepare and train well, so that you are ready when the manager calls on you.

“You look at highlights of the season, did we win anything, things like that. But I wouldn’t put any goal or appearance totals out there because, at a club like this, you never know when the manager is going to use you.”

Although his best years may well be behind him the striker has an undoubted goalscoring talent which is something that has been devoid at Villa Park for a number of years. If Owen can establish his fitness and sustain a lengthy spell in a team he has proved critics wrong time and time again but whether this is possible will prove the turning point. A deal would definitely prove a shrewd bit of business for the Midlands club and it’s refreshing to see the manager showing an interest in new players already!
