Despite having agreed to re-enter contract negotiations with veteran keeper Brad Friedel at the end of the month, Villa boss Gerard Houllier is still reportedly keen on bringing in a new keeper to replace the 39-year-old in the long run. It has been touted that his scouting search has not spanned very far of late, having been linked with a move to Midlands and relegation rivals Wolves. Mick McCarthy’s men find themselves in the bottom three, despite beating Villa away from home in recent weeks, and were shamed by Everton at the weekend collapsing to a 0-3 home defeat. Welsh international stopper Wayne Hennessey has been a mainstay of late, having found it hard to replace Friedel’s countryman Marcus Hahnemann at the start of the season, but if rumours are to be believed he may be fighting for a starting berth with two different American’s next season in Brad’s Friedel and Guzan. At 24 Hennessey has already picked up 30 senior international caps for Wales and was recently powerless to resist an England front-line led by Darren Bent and Ashley Young. In 18 league games this season the young keeper has conceded 30 goals, keeping a commendable 5 clean sheets in the process.
