Goals from Marc Albrighton and a brace from Gary Gardner gave Kevin MacDonald’s men a much needed victory after 4 successive defeats. The home side were good value for their lead despite a spirited comeback from the visitors after Villa went 3-0 up shortly after half time. A strong line-up including the likes of Herd, Clark, Baker, Gardner, Salifou, Bradley and Albirghton is outplayed Liverpool’s young side. The visitors began the game well with veteran keeper Andy Marshall twice saving well from the Reds’ Tom Ince. However, Villa began to keep the ball well and broke the deadlock when neat work from Gary Gardner picked out Harry Forrester on the left, whose clipped cross picked out Albrighton who volleyed home emphatically. Forrester was involved again in Villa’s second when Baker lofted a ball over the Liverpool back line to the young winger who was bundled over by Liverpool skipper Wisdon. Gary Gardner took the spot kick and hammered home, sending keeper Hansen the wrong way. Shortly after the break a fantastic looping cross from Albrighton picked out Gardner again who cushioned a lovely header of the Reds keeper. Liverpool put up a good fight and deserved their quality consolation goal from Portuguese youngster Toni Silva who jinked past Baker before poking home. The likes of Herd, Clark and Forrester caught the eye alongside the goalscorers.
