Journalists are now assembling in the 1874 lounge at Villa Park ahead of a scheduled press conference announcing the signing of Darren Bent for £18m. I understand that an initial bid of £18 was accepted with a further £1.5m being spent if the club avoids relegation and a another £1.5m going out if the player scores a set amount of goals in a certain number of games. Another £3m is also expected to go Sunderland’s way over the course of the contract which will mean the fee could rise to £24m, double that of the fee spent on the likes of Milner and Downing. Bent has now agreed terms and will be available for selection ahead of the Manchester City fixture, a game which has seen a huge boost in ticket sales with the announcement of the new signing. Finally a proven goalscorer at Villa Park. Well done to Randy Lerner, Paul Faulkner and Gerard Houllier for making this happen! UTV!
