Better late than never, I have compiled all the player stats that I have on the site from last season as I look to set up the new pages/features on the site for next season (suggestions welcome!) These are just a basic round-up of appearances including as sub etc., goals, assists, yellow cards, red cards and average ratings. A couple of notes; assists always differ wildly from different sources, mine are based from having watched every game/goal and judging what I consider to be a lay-off/pass/cross which led to a goal. In terms of average player ratings they are based on the ratings I have given the players in all my match reports this season, completely my own opinions so many of you won’t agree, but kick off if you like, it’s all about opinions! Was Houllier Really That Bad? A Look at his Reign/Results

Aston Villa parted company with 63-year-old Frenchman Gerard Houllier by mutual consent yesterday, after a much maligned tenure at the club ended in a serious health scare which led to the board’s decision to look elsewhere. Having looked at the stats from yesterday’s game there are some quite outstanding figures from Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov. The Bulgarian has had a somewhat disappointing season, certainly for the first two thirds, but his impact on the win over Liverpool should not be overlooked. The midfielder had the most touches of any player on the pitch (96), attempted the most passes (67) and incredibly was successful with 66 of those (99%). The veteran also made the most tackles (5), completed the most turnovers of possession (3) and was accurate with all 11 of the long balls he attempted. Hats off to you Sir! Bent Stats Make Him January’s Most Important Signing

Darren Bent’s double at the Emirates yesterday took his tally for Villa to 9 goals in just 15 games. When the club signed the former Sunderland man for an initial fee of £18m many, including some Villa fans, were quick to assume that the club’s record transfer was a panic buy with Houllier’s side tantalisingly close to the relegation zone. Bent made an immediate impact at Villa Park, scoring the only goal in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in January and has been scoring regularly ever since with the weekend’s brace joining an impressive double away at Everton and a fantastic headed equaliser at Stoke to name a few.
