Liverpool Leading Friedel Followers

Brad Friedel is being linked with a return to Liverpool having yet to sign a new contract extension at Aston Villa. Assistant manager Gary McAllister claims that the club want the veteran to stay but have taken his advancing age into consideration in their offer. Midlands rivals West Brom and Tottenham are also keen from the Premier League according to reports and of the three I would suggest that a move to Spurs may be the most likely, to replace the laughing stock that is Heurelho Gomes, though I think he will stay on at Villa. Liverpool have been sweating on the future of keeper Pepe Reina but the Spaniard pledged his commitment to the club under Kenny Dalglish and looks to be staying. Despite this the newly recalled Liverpool boss is thought to be keen on taking the 39-year-old, to be 40 on Wednesday, to Anfield as cover. The Reds will undoubtedly be able to offer better wages but Friedel doesn’t seem like the money grabbing type at all and will be very completely new to warming a bench having started every league game for Villa since signing. Young Makes Biggest Hint Yet at Summer Departure

Ashley Young looks destined to leave the club in the summer as his contract winds down in 2012, having made some pretty obvious ‘come and get me’ comments to his potential suitors. The 25-year-old spoke to the Birmingham Mail, revealing that he hopes to win titles and cups as he enters the peak of his career in a year or so’s time. The winger’s current deal runs out in 2012 and his availability has caught the eye of the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool in particular, although the likes of Manchester City (GRRRR) and Real Madrid have also been linked. A suggested fee of around £15m seems most credible although hopefully the growing interest in the England international can spark a bidding war for Villa’s sake. Read Young’s full comments here

Villa’s Best News of the Season: Downing Ready to Commit til 2015

Aston Villa’s Supporter’s, Sponsor’s and Player’s Player of the Year Stewart Downing has given fans a much needed boost after a miserable season which has seen the former Middlesbrough man steal the show at Villa Park, by announcing that he is happy at the club and hopes to sign a new deal with talks already under way. The winger admitted that the club have been way below par this season but remained adamant that they were heading in the right direction, citing the signing of contract extensions with the young guns at the club, alongside big money signings such as Darren Bent, as evidence that the team will be much improved next term. With Ashley Young out of contract in 2012, it is widely expected that he will leave the club in the summer and many feared that Downing could follow suit with the likes of Liverpool interested in Villa’s star duo. However, the England international seems set to sign a new four-year contract until 2015, claiming that the club having shown such an interest in renewing his contract, despite it still having two years to run, is a real confidence boost. QUOTED: Delfouneso Determined to Become First Team Regular

Villa youngster Nathan Delfouneso has returned from a loan spell with Championship side Burnley in determined mood, claiming that the time away has helped is development despite the striker netting just once in 11 appearances, of which 7 were starts for the Clarets. The 20-year-old hopes that Gary McAllister will give him a chance in the last two games of the season, adding:

“I am hungry, very hungry, to get myself involved. Hopefully I will be involved before the end of the season. I am going to go all out to become a regular in the coming seasons.

“I am looking to push on and be a success here. I want to work hard in training. The last two are great games and I’d love to be involved in them.

“Going on loan to Burnley is an experience I think I needed — playing back-to-back games. I think I needed to do that. I feel like I’ve come back as a far more educated player. It has been good for my development.”

QUOTED: Petrov Admits the Players Have Let the Fans Down

Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has followed suit from Luke Young after admitting that the club’s campaign has been bitterly disappointing, urging the players to ensure that this season’s failings are a one-off. There was one line in his response to being asked whether the club should bring in new players which stood out to me, saying: “You need to ask the people who are going to be in charge that question”, not you need to ask the management that question, adding to the speculation that Gerard Houllier and Gary McAllister will not be in charge next time round. Reo-Coker Admits ‘Big Decision’ Amid Dortmund Interest

Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, out of contract this summer, has admitted that he has a big decision to make with regards to his footballing future, insisting that ensuring he is playing regularly is his priority over any financial benefits. The 26-year-old turns 27 next week and claims that as he enters the best years of his career, he needs to be playing, confirming that interest is being shown from abroad. Reo-Coker had fallen out of favour under Martin O’Neill and had been in and out of the team since signing for the club 4 years ago. This season he has cemented a place in the first team and claims that assurances need to be made by Villa that this would remain the case were he to stay at the club. Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund have been credited with an interest today and join the likes of Galatasaray, as well as a number of suitors from Spain and Italy who are rumoured to be interest. Nigel claims that playing is an essential factor in his decision but claims that he has ambitions of playing Europe, adding that teams in the Champions League are interested. I would suggest that playing for a Champions League club and getting regular action are somewhat juxtaposed in NRC’s case, but the midfielder is ambitious and is looking increasingly likely to leave.
