Aston Villa 0 – 0 Chelsea

This match report is a little overdue due to my unavailability this weekend but I did watch the game and it wasn’t exactly an epic. Villa went into the game with high hopes, especially as Chelsea’s injury list made exciting reading. No Lampard, Drogba or Alex to name a few, would have had Houllier looking to take advantage but an ever-growing absentee list of his own was beginning to look worrying. Agbonlahor remains a couple of weeks away from a return after groin surgery and he was joined on the treatment table on the eve of the game. Emile Heskey was forced to withdraw with a back problem and ever-presents, Luke Young and Marc Albrighton could also not be risked. Villa were looking to maintain a fantastic home record, having lost just once to the champions in their last 11 outings at Villa Park. Make that 12 as the two sides played out a forgettable 0-0 draw but the game did have its moments and a point a piece proved a fair outcome. More Match Report

Aston Villa vs Chelsea Pre-Match Predictions

Tomorrow’s game signifies a tough call in any hardened Villa fans prediction efforts. The Champions have won 6 from 7 though injuries and a superb home record for Villa against the Blues gives encouraging reading. Restricting the likes of Malouda, Anelka and Essien will be top of Houllier’s agenda with Drogba and Lampard out. Villa have lost just once in their last 11 home outing’s against Chelsea and I’m optimistic that they can stretch this run with a draw perhaps being most likely. Is my biased view swaying my judgement or am I being to cautious in my prediction? Let me know what your predicted outcome is along with line-ups and scorers. Good Luck.

Opponent: Chelsea

Venue: Villa Park

Kick Off: 17:30

Gerard Houllier faces his toughest test to date as manager of Aston Villa as the club play host to League Champions, Chelsea. Many Villa fans will look back in dread at the crushing 7-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge last season but Villa have plenty to be optimistic about this time around. In the same fixture last term the home side made one of their best performances of the season to spring a shock 2-1 victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s men. Goals from centre back’s, James Collins and Richard Dunne were enough to overturn an early Didier Drogba goal, a man who is missing this time around. More Match Preview

Reports were circulating this morning in the Daily Mirror that Curtis Davies was set to rekindle his playing career at Leicester City. Aston Villa have now confirmed that the 25-year-old will link up with the Foxes on a month-long loan deal. Leicester, now managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was interviewed for the job at Villa Park, have pounced to sign the out-of-favour centre back in a deal that should benefit all parties. The club have also confirmed that young striker James Collins Jnr, who netted in yesterdays reserve win against Blackburn, has joined League Two side Burton Albion for the same duration. Villa Reserves 2 – 1 Blackburn Reserves

Aston Villa’s second string, managed by Kevin MacDonald came from a goal behind at half time to beat visitors Blackburn at Bodymoor Heath. The game was a chance for the youngsters in the set up to show what they could do with Reserve team regulars such as Clark, Bannan and Salifou all unavailable. MacDonald had been linked with the vacant Hibernian post this week but focused on maintaining a decent start to the reserves campaign seeing the claret and blue side unbeaten in their last 4 outings. The match proved to be a game of two halves and indeed two penalties with the returning Nathan Delfouneso clinching the victory for the home side.

Aston Villa Rumour Mill: October 1st – 14th

Another new feature will see me look over and evaluate the rumours floating around Villa Park in recent weeks. Of course these stories are merely speculation as Houllier looks to assess his squad ahead of the January transfer window. The Frenchman’s ties to the national set-up should see the club linked with a lot of French based talent and the start of October has been no different. I will give my opinions on the quality of any potential deal as well as assessing the likelihood that a transfer could come to fruition. In my first Rumour Mill update I have singled out reports surrounding Franck Tabanou, Gervinho and Guillaume Hoarau. Transfer Rumours

With the new manager beginning to settle into his job at Villa Park and a traumatic pre-season behind us, exciting news on the Villa front is drying up. In order to get your opinions and hopefully your interest I will be bringing in some new features to the site as well as hoping to strike a deal with the club to get official press releases and images. While I wait upon that enquiry, here is a feature I will be running focusing in on the performances of certain individuals. In a week where he has made his first international starting XI I thought who better to start with then Ashley Young. Remember these are only opinions alongside my player ratings so let me know how you think Young has started the 2010/11 season!

Stewart Downing has been called up to Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Montenegro on Tuesday. The Villa winger comes in as a like for like replacement for the injured Aaron Lennon of Tottenham. The Spurs wide-man joins Everton’s Phil Jagielka on the treatment table ahead of England’s crucial home tie, a match most sport betting sites have tipped as a comfortable win for England.

The Big Man has had an indifferent start to this season and the fans favourite has this week revealed his uncertainty over his future at Villa. The 31-year-old must have feared for his place when the new manager, who sold him to the club, came in and it appears that the Norwegian may have to settle for a bench-warmers status after Heskey’s fine form. Carew has started this campaign with a few niggles but when he has played the striker has looked low on confidence and out of sorts. Are the fans starting to fall out of love with the man they love to sing about? Read more

Clark Open to Ireland, Reserves in Action with Newcastle

Villa youngster Ciaran Clark has opened the door for an international career with the Republic of Ireland. The Villa reserve captain has represented England at all youth levels and even skippered the Under 20’s side but has revealed he would encourage a call up from Ireland. Team-mate and fellow centre back, Richard Dunne recommended the young talent to the recruitment team at the FAI after only recently finding out that Clark was eligible for the Emerald Isle. Ciaran qualifies through his Mother and may well look to ensure an international career by opting to play for Ireland over England. In my opinion this would be a big loss to the England national side as the centre back seems to have all the qualities to be a top player. Dunne has waxed lyrical about the 21 and believes that Ireland would manage a real coup in tempting Clark to ditch England. Villa Reserves vs Newcastle
