The long expected and drawn out potential transfer which could see Villa winger Ashley Young join Manchester United is set to be completed before the weekend after the England international underwent a medical at Old Trafford with a view to securing a switch to the champions on a five-year deal.

The 25-year-old has been subject of extreme speculation for much of the summer and last season after retracting desires to sign a new contract in the opening months of the campaign. The former Watford man had stated from then on that he would wait to discuss his future at Villa Park at the end of last term with his current deal set to expire in 2012.

This status alerted the interest of some of Europe’s clubs an now looks to have earned Young a move to United in a deal which is expected to be worth around £15m, significantly lower than his talents would command were he to have a longer deal tied down with Villa.

Young has reiterated his desire to play at the top level, i.e. Champions League, and Alex McLeish seemed doomed to losing his star man before his tenure at the club had even begun. All the best Ashley! A great servant to Aston Villa and a great player to boot.
