Just a day after hearing of the death of Villa legend Johnny Dixon, we now have the further sad news that Vic Crowe has passed away. Crowe grew up in Handsworth and played for and managed Aston Villa during his lifetime, spending, like Dixon, a total of 17 years at the club.

Crowe played for Villa as a wing half (one of those wonderful old positions that the youngsters here won’t have heard of!) between ‘52 and ‘64 and then returned to Villa Park as the manager in ‘70, for a four year stint in charge of the club.

Over the pond in Portland, Oregon, Vic Crowe is of legendary status for the amazing work he did managing Portland Timbers in the mid 70’s. Crowe led the team to league success and turned the city on to this funny English game called soccer.

After suffering with illness for a long time, Crowe passed away on 21 Jan, just 10 days short of 77 years of age.

The 1957 FA Cup victory was missed by Crowe due to injury, but the Welsh born player was captain at Villa when we won the Second Division and the League Cup at the start of the 60’s. As a manager he also led a Third Division Villa to the League Cup final and won the Third Division.

Thanks for your contributions to the club we love Vic. Farewell.
