Transfer Gossip – lap it up, what there is of it anyway
13 days into the transfer window and so far it’s been a low key affair for Villa, despite being linked with about 2,000 players during December. With the way the papers were talking before Christmas, I was expecting it to be standing room only at Villa Park by now and for Randy Lerner to be filing for bankruptcy. But it turns out you can’t always trust the rumours you read… who knew?!
Emile Heskey was a major rumour for us, but now looks more likely to make Liverpool his destination if he moves away from the JJB. The England striker has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity of late, despite his game not really changing all that much. He’s playing a little better, but he’s always been a good player, people just never seemed to want to believe it before.
The N’Zogbia rumour is now picking up speed, despite the fact that MON has denied an interest in the stroppy winger on the official Villa site. The rumour now includes Nicky Shorey heading up to Newcastle in a player plus cash deal for the Frenchman. O’Neill has also said on the official site that he doesn’t plan to let Shorey go just 6 months after bringing him in, so it seems very unlikely that this rumour has any substance.
The most exciting talk so far this January is the emergence of Kenwyne Jones as a target for Villa. Initially there was talk of a £5m deal for the tall Trinidad and Tobago international, but now it has shot up to £12m, which is more in the region you’d expect Sunderland to want for him in these crazy times, where the whole country is broke apart from those working in the Premier League. Jones could be a good solution for us, having height and a keen finishing ability. He could be the perfect compliment to Ashley Young by getting on the end of his crosses. Jones could also work well with Agbon, take for example the second goal against WBA, Aggy ran into the box and looked up for a pass only to see an empty box because he is the lone striker. Had Jones been there, a simple lay up by Aggy and a simple tap in. As luck had it, we scored anyway but you can’t rely on Scott Carson being in goal every week! Kenwyne Jones has the potential to change the way we play, at the minute we work very hard for our goals, simple goals just aren’t available to us with current personnel, but if you look at how many simple goals Van Nistlerooy scored for Man Utd, you’d see how effective they can be in your season’s push.
Nothing further has been heard about Marlon Harewood’s potential exit, but that may be because there aren’t any clubs left to link him with a move to! It is likely to see him go during this transfer window or the next as he isn’t getting any younger and he wants to play some football. I still think he should bite the bullet and go down a division, then he could be getting games and goals regularly.
That’s it for today but I’ll keep my ear to the ground and bring you more links and rumours the second they get made up!

The Sun reckons that Gabby was attempting a cross when that goal was scored – He looked up and saw noone was there, so he took a shot. I’m still convinced it was on target, and therefore it was not an own goal, and my fantasy football team get another three points.
The Sun don’t know their arse from their elbow sometimes! There was no-one there to cross it to. He was going for the far corner, but I doubt it would’ve gone in if it wasn’t for Carsey’s error prone ways. I think you have selfish-fantasy-football-points-wanting motives for saying it was on target. I’m on to you James
