Transfer gossipJanuary’s here, it’s a new year and we’re all back at work, we’re all still writing ‘08′ when we date anything and we’re all gonna have a birthday in 09 and get a year older. But on the bright side; January’s here, the transfer window is open!! Yes, it’s fun time in the football world, when speculation, rumours and sometimes just plain made up lies are everywhere, linking Ronaldo to Man City, Kaka to Man City and err… well just lots of people to Man City really.

They may be the new media darlings, and they would go and do it the season we break into the top four and steal our limelight, but there’s still a few new buzzes coming out each day about the Mighty Villans.

  • Ashley Young’s linking with Real Madrid was like a horror story to all Villa fans, but the latest rumour is that O’Neill will sell him if they offer £75m. Not a bad pay day and it probably would be hard for Lerner to turn down, but rumours like this need to be quashed before Abu Dhabi United hear it and walk into MON’s office with a very large briefcase!
  • Sunderland’s star striker, Kenwyne Jones, has emerged as a possible target for us now. Jones has a 1 in 4 record for the Black Cats, but you can’t help thinking he could do much better than that with Milner, Young and Barry supplying him. The Trinidad & Tobago international suffered from a serious knee injury that kept him out for a few months, which may make MON hesitant as he already has a big striker on the physio’s table and is desperately looking for one who is available every week. The new Mackem manager, Sbragia, has been quoted saying he isn’t interested in selling his best players, but they do have a bigger squad than he wants and it’s unlikely he’ll get that many takers for his fringe players (unless they have mid-table-of-the-Championship aspirations).
  • Believe it or not, MON is apparently interested in a Celtic player. Yeah, I know its a huge shock to you all but he is rumoured to be interested in Aiden McGeady of the Hoops. McGeady is a winger, which isn’t a position we need to reinforce as a priority, so I reckon this is unlikey to go through. He has also recently had a big bust up with Strachan, so do we really need to be signing players that may cause unrest in the dressing room?
  • The whole Jermain Defoe thing seems to be over as far as we’re concerned, a return to Tottenham looking fairly close to going through. Redknapp is clearly a fan of the pint-sized striker and will have signed him twice and spent over £20m on him in 12 months if it happens. Defoe seems to want a return to Spurs, so MON is looking elsewhere. Defoe could’ve been good for us, but I think a taller striker would be better as we have such good crossing talents. Portsmouth will be in big trouble if they let him go, they are already sliding under Tony Adams, so to let one of their main hopes go seems stupid. Money talks though.
