McLeish to Tempt Mentor Fergie into Brown Sale

Alex McLeish is reportedly ready to use his close relationship with Man United manager Alex Ferguson to try to bring Wes Brown to Villa Park in a £3m deal with Sunderland and Everton also interested.

The former England international, now 31, can play at centre back as well as right back and his ability to play along the backline is likely to be a key attribute that will be attracting Villa’s new manager with full back options taking a hit with a return to Spurs for Kyle Walker. Brown may well be available and ready for a move having spent his entire career at Old Trafford after only starting 4 league games last season, making a further 3 substitute appearances.

Brown has made 23 senior international appearances in the past, netting once, and is contracted to United until the end of next season. His age, contract status and the fact that he hasn’t played regular first team football for years should be commanding a lower fee in my opinion. He has been highly rated in his time at United, especially by Alex Ferguson who is rarely wrong but I don’t see Brown being anything more than a squad player and with the likes of Lichaj, Herd, Baker and Clark at the club, I would prefer to see the money spent on a starting left back, assuming Warnock leaves, and trusting the youngsters to fill in when needed.
