It’s Official, Martinez Snubs Villa to Honour Wigan Contract

A club statement from Aston Villa has confirmed the speculation suggesting that Roberto Martinez would turn down the opportunity to replace Gerard Houllier at Villa Park. The young Spaniard’s loyalty to his club and chairman should be applauded but I fear it is at the severe detriment to image of our great club with our pulling power through the floor. Dreams of Ancelotti seem far away now! A bad day regardless of whether fans were keen on the move or not and Randy needs to make a real turnaround with Martinez now joining the likes of Ancelotti, Benitez, McLaren and Hughes who are all thought to be definite no go’s for the club. Hard to keep the faith but try, we need to unite in hard times! Read more

Almost Half of Villa Fans Pro Martinez, a Third Against and the Rest on the Fence

Villa fans need to stay alert today as a decision could be made over Roberto Martinez’s potential move to the club with Lerner believed to have set a deadline of this afternoon for the Spaniard to make his mind up. Speculation grew yesterday that Randy’s plane made a sudden trip to Corsica leading to dreams of a renewed swoop for Carlo Ancelotti, who turns 52 today, could he celebrate it by becoming Villa’s new boss? Not likely! Martinez call is by no means a done deal and a snub from the young manager would be a real setback to the club’s plans, but also could be of extreme detriment to its reputation. Of the poll questioning the fans whether the 37-year-old was the right man to take Villa forward, split results came back, as expected, though I was pleased to see a slight swing in the favour of a move. Off an agonisingly odd figure of 499 voters, 233 were pro Martinez (46.7%), 171 were against (34.3%) and the remaining 95 (19%) were on the fence.

Villa Manager Search Finally Coming to a Head with Martinez?

I write these articles about new manager’s coming in with no confidence any more! However, Wigan have officially given Roberto Martinez permission to talk to Aston Villa (as long as he’s home before midnight), though chairman Dave Whelan claims that he would be very surprised if the 37-year-old took the job, despite flying back from holiday for talks. Managerial Latest: McLaren Drops as Benitez, Coyle and Martinez Emerge

This is pure speculation but will come as a relief to many Villa fans that Steve McLaren has slipped to 5th favourite in line to get the Villa job according to the bookies. However, I wouldn’t follow the odds too carefully as not only do they keep changing, but most suggest that Hughes is still the favourite despite club sources which strongly suggest otherwise. Mat Kendrick, the Villa correspondent for Birmingham Mail went as far as to say he would be ‘amazed’ if the Welshman took over the post. Read more

Jol is 3rd in 2 Days to be Ruled out of Villa Job After Joining Fulham

June 7, 2011 by · 3 Comments

Martin Jol has reportedly agreed a 2-year contract to takeover the vacated Fulham manager’s post by Mark Hughes, meaning the London club have acted quickly to replace their departed man, a feat which Villa are failing to do. Yesterday, the then favourite for the job, Carlo Ancelotti revealed that he had not contact with the club, though sources strongly suggest otherwise, and the Italian claimed that he would be taking a year out of management. Later in the day Didier Deschamps, albeit a very long shot candidate for the Villa job, committed his future to Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille. The news that former Spurs boss Jol has now been made unavailable sees Villa’s options becoming increasingly limited, with fans least favourite Steve McLaren now a favourite with the bookies. Interestingly, Owen Coyle’s odds have shortened quite dramatically to make him second favourite at as little as 5/2 though sources in Bolton say no contact has been made. If we don’t act fast, McLaren is seeming more and more likely!

Villa No-Go for Carlo so Who’s Favourite Now?

Aston Villa fans like myself hoping for an ambitious attempt to bring former AC Milan and Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti to take up the vacated manager’s post left by Gerard Houllier last week have been hit with a blow. The Italian has claimed that he had not been in contact with any club and that he intended to take a year out of management following his recent sacking from Stamford Bridge. Read more

After the club revealed yesterday that they had not been in contact with huge favourite Mark Hughes, who resigned his post at Fulham yesterday, the search for a new manager continues. Having quit his job at Craven Cottage, it seemed for all the world that the Welshman would be on his way to Villa Park before both parties denied the reports. Read more
