So three games and one month into the season and Villa fans seem to have split opinions on the progression, if they believe there has been any, under Alex McLeish. The Scot has come in and picked the same team for every game excluding the forced change in bringing in Chris Herd to replace the outgoing Luke Young last time out. Not only has he stuck to the same XI, indicating he is pleased with the form the side has shown, he has used the same substitutes thus far in Albrighton, Bannan and Clark. Read more

From a completely unbiased stand-point considering the club are expected to complete the signing of Shay Given in the next 24 hours, if you were able to choose between Brad Friedel renewing his contract or a deal for Given a month ago, who would you have chosen?

Almost Half of Villa Fans Pro Martinez, a Third Against and the Rest on the Fence

Villa fans need to stay alert today as a decision could be made over Roberto Martinez’s potential move to the club with Lerner believed to have set a deadline of this afternoon for the Spaniard to make his mind up. Speculation grew yesterday that Randy’s plane made a sudden trip to Corsica leading to dreams of a renewed swoop for Carlo Ancelotti, who turns 52 today, could he celebrate it by becoming Villa’s new boss? Not likely! Martinez call is by no means a done deal and a snub from the young manager would be a real setback to the club’s plans, but also could be of extreme detriment to its reputation. Of the poll questioning the fans whether the 37-year-old was the right man to take Villa forward, split results came back, as expected, though I was pleased to see a slight swing in the favour of a move. Off an agonisingly odd figure of 499 voters, 233 were pro Martinez (46.7%), 171 were against (34.3%) and the remaining 95 (19%) were on the fence.

Reports this morning from the Daily Mirror claim that Tottenham have leapfrogged Liverpool in the race to sign veteran keeper Brad Friedel with the American favouring the prospect of first team football which is far more likely at Spurs than his former club. Meanwhile, the Guardian report that Villa have re-established their interest in Rangers stopper Allan McGregor.
