FT Villa Res 3 – Liverpool Res 1: Albrighton, Gardner x2

Goals from Marc Albrighton and a brace from Gary Gardner gave Kevin MacDonald’s men a much needed victory after 4 successive defeats. The home side were good value for their lead despite a spirited comeback from the visitors after Villa went 3-0 up shortly after half time. A strong line-up including the likes of Herd, Clark, Baker, Gardner, Salifou, Bradley and Albirghton is outplayed Liverpool’s young side. The visitors began the game well with veteran keeper Andy Marshall twice saving well from the Reds’ Tom Ince. However, Villa began to keep the ball well and broke the deadlock when neat work from Gary Gardner picked out Harry Forrester on the left, whose clipped cross picked out Albrighton who volleyed home emphatically. Forrester was involved again in Villa’s second when Baker lofted a ball over the Liverpool back line to the young winger who was bundled over by Liverpool skipper Wisdon. Gary Gardner took the spot kick and hammered home, sending keeper Hansen the wrong way. Shortly after the break a fantastic looping cross from Albrighton picked out Gardner again who cushioned a lovely header of the Reds keeper. Liverpool put up a good fight and deserved their quality consolation goal from Portuguese youngster Toni Silva who jinked past Baker before poking home. The likes of Herd, Clark and Forrester caught the eye alongside the goalscorers.

Half time at Villa Park for the reserves outing against Liverpool’s second string and it’s 2-0 Villa. MacDonald is looking to end a run of three straight defeats which have dented his sides title hopes and the first half in this clash is going exactly to plan. Warnock in Action Tonight, for Villa Reserves not England!

After travelling to South Africa with the England squad to compete at the World Cup last summer, despite not featuring in the tournament, Stephen Warnock’s demise at club level has been catastrophic for his future international chances. With the national side facing Ghana tonight, the left-back would have been hoping to be involved in such games at the start of the season, but a fall-out with Gerard Houllier on the back of a dismal run of form in the first half of the season has seen the defender forced out of the first team set-up. The 29-year-old is all but certain to leave in the summer but lines up alongside fellow reject Habib Beye in an otherwise youthful reserve team which travel to Bolton for a 7pm kick off tonight.

The team in full is as follows; Siegrist, Herd, Deeney, Johnson, Devine, Beye, Berry, Forrester, Taylor, Warnock, Darkin. Subs: Nelson-Addy, Barrett, Juan Serrano, Cameron, Donacien

After netting in his first outing for the Aston Villa reserves 2-1 defeat to Everton last week, 17-year-old Spaniard Juan Serrano penned his first professional contract with the club and youth team coach Tony McAndrew is touting big things for the midfielder. Having signed from Espanyol at the start of the season the youngster had been eased into the Villa youth set-up before scoring on his debut for the second string last week. Serrano has now sufficiently impressed the clubs coaches to earn a new deal at the club and McAndrew claims he is settling into the style of play at Villa very well. Aston Villa Res vs Wigan: Warnock Captains Side in 1-0 Defeat

Villa reserves traveled to Wigan this afternoon and suffered their second successive defeat having gone 11 games unbeaten previous to the 3-1 defeat to Wolves last week. A young Villa side included the likes of 16-year-old Jordan Graham playing from the left and 15-year-old Robinson from the right. Stephen Warnock captained the side, lining up in centre midfield alongside Gary Gardner, arguably the man of the match once again, in a game the second string ended up losing 1-0 after a cross-cum-shot free-kick from Wigan’s Redmond. The young lions had plenty of possession but failed to carve out enough clear cut chances in a scrappy game at times. Match Report

Villa’s Young Lions Progress to Youth Cup Semis

Aston Villa’s youth setup has come up trumps once again this season having brought through the likes of Ciaran Clark, Marc Albrighton, Barry Bannan and Nathan Baker in recent years. Tony McAndrew’s side toppled Middlesbrough 3-1 yesterday in the Youth Cup quarter-finals, showing signs of continued progression from the academy at Villa Park. Captain Daniel Johnson gave Villa a first-half opener, leading by example throughout. A well taken goal from Graham Burke shortly after half-time gave Villa a two goal cushion before Charlie Wyke pulled one back for Boro. However, victory was sealed when Matthew Waters put past his own keeper to make it 3-1 and ensure Villa progressed to the semi-finals.

Wolves Reserves 3 – 1 Aston Villa Reserves

Villa’s second string slipped off the pace at the top of the reserves league table in their fight for the title with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, who we smashed 10-1 earlier in the campaign. Villa were unable to hold onto a 1-0 half time lead in the away clash against their local rivals after Gary Gardner opened the scoring inside 20 minutes at the second attempt after his close range free-kick was saved. A Geoffrey Mujangi Bia brace saw Wolves overturn the result after Danny Batth had levelled with a header after the break. The game saw run-outs for current misfits Stephen Warnock and Habib Beye but the experienced full-backs were unable to prevent a defensive collapse in the second half.
