Aston Villa’s youth team captain Daniel Johnson netted penalties in either half of their season ending clash with Chelsea to give Tony McAndrew’s men a 2-0 victory and in turn, the Premier Academy League Group B title. The weekend’s win over Charlton saw Villa’s youngsters climb above Midlands rivals Leicester to the top of the pile, sealing league glory with a decisive away victory at the Blues Cobham training ground today. Johnson has been a shining light for the youth team this year and was the fitting winner of today’s game, netting his 11th and 12th of the season after winger Jack Grealish was fouled in the first 45 before Jordan Graham was upended in the second half. The U18s are now waiting to discover who they will play in the Barclays Premier Academy League semi-finals, with the aim of being crowned overall national champions. UTV Academy. Keep ’em coming!

Chelsea Reserves – 2; Villa Reserves – 1: Match Report

Chelsea defeated Aston Villa reserves in MacDonald’s sides final game of the season after two early goals from the hosts helped to secure a 2-1 home victory despite a spirited fightback from the young Villa side. Chelsea opened the scoring when Magnay won a header from Tore’s corner with Lalkovic getting the final touch to bundle it home. The home side doubled their lead after terrific work from McEachran, splitting the defence with a fine pass, found Phillip who raced through to slot past Siegrist. A great response from Villa saw Burke hit the post just minutes later after Osbourne found Lampkin in space, who squared to Burke on the edge of the area, whose low shot hit the foot of the post. Philip almost extended his account and the lead after more good work from McEachran but a decent two-handed save from Siegrist denied him. A fabulous long range strike from Samir Carruthers gave Villa a deserved goal after a fine passing move. In the second half Herd and Gardner both had early headed efforts just off target before a superb save from Siegrist denied Tore. Villa came close when great technique from Johnson saw the youth skipper rifle an angled half-volley which took Gardner by surprise and brushed off his head before going wide. Berry nearly forced home an equaliser after beating a defender and angling a left-foot shot towards the bottom corner but Sebek saved with his outstretched boot. An agonisingly close header from Ellis Deeney in the dying minutes of injury time saw the defender hit the bar after head tennis in the Chelsea box but it ended 2-1 to Chelsea.

Starting XI: Siegrist, Berry, Deeney, Osbourne, Herd, Baker, Carruthers, Gardner, Lampkin, Burke, Johnson. Subs: Williams (on for Johnson), Barrett, Devine (on for Carruthers), Nelson-Addy, Taylor (on for Burke).

Final Reserves Game of the Season vs Chelsea: Team News

Kevin MacDonald’s reserves side end an up and down season with a tough test against Chelsea this afternoon (2pm). The young Villa side for the most part have been joined in some part by the likes of Habib Beye and Stephen Warnock this term, along with second string mainstay Moustapha Salifou, but it has been the kids that have stolen the show this term. Despite impressive displays from Harry Forrester, Samir Carruthers, Chris Herd, Graham Burke, Daniel Johnson and Gary Gardner, MacDonald’s men have been unable to defend the three year winning streak of their league title after a mid season lull led to four successive defeats. Since then they have gone unbeaten in three games but it has not been enough to catch up with the leaders. Undoubtedly the highlight of this reserves league season was an astonishing 10-1 win over high flyers Arsenal but the progression into the first team of the likes of Albrighton and Clark and the departure on loan from Bannan, Hogg, Lichaj and Delfouneso have left the side a little thin on the ground. It has however, meant that a new crop have had the chance to impress so look out for 16-year-olds Jordan Graham and Callum Robinson in years to come, as well as Spanish signing Juan Serrano.

Starting XI: Siegrist, Berry, Deeney, Osbourne, Herd, Baker, Carruthers, Gardner, Lampkin, Burke, Johnson. Subs: Williams, Barrett, Devine, Nelson-Addy, Taylor.

I thought I’d do a little statistical update on the kids out on loan at the moment with some showing more promise than others during their temporary spells in the Championship this season. The likes of Barry Bannan, Nathan Delfouneso and Andy Weimann have been touted with spells in the first team next term and have been looking to impress the boss from afar in 2011, joined by the likes of Jonathan Hogg, Eric Lichaj, Shane Lowry and Elliott Parish out on loan. Villa’s Young Lions Crash Out in Youth Cup Semi

Aston Villa’s Under-18 side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United’s youth set-up in their second leg tie of the semi-finals of the youth cup, failing to overturn a 0-1 deficit from the home leg last month. A final against either Manchester United or Chelsea awaits the Blades youngsters who are enjoying a far greater return then their senior counterparts who look set to be relegated down to League One. United’s captain Elliott Whitehouse bagged both goals before being sent off for a second bookable offence late in the game. All of this after he had opened the scoring on the brink of half time and doubled his tally after Villa’s keeper Barrett was sent off for conceding a second half penalty. Villa had a penalty of their own in the closing stages, won and subsequently missed by midfielder Samir Carruthers. The star man without doubt was 16-year-old Jordan Graham who continues to show the promise which has seen him linked with the league’s top clubs. The young winger has earned a call-up, alongside team-mate Callum Robinson, in Kenny Swain’s England Under-16 squad who have now turned their attention to the annual international Montaigu Tournament in France later this month.
