Back to business.

Another gap for the internationals and we’re back to league business. At home to Chelsea in the live match this Saturday after Milner, Gabby and Heskey did their bit in making sure that England sewed up the easiest of tasks in getting us over the line for World Cup qualification.

Heskey may be bemoaning his lack of action for his club but at least he doesn’t have to play at left back!! I went to Wembley to watch the game last night and was pleased that Milner did such a good job when he went on. Hitting the post after a lovely turn of pace, and a bit of trickery saw him go past his marker. Excellent play from a cracking little player. His price tag doesn’t seem quite so large now does it? Perhaps if Heskey put in a little more effort, and scored the odd goal here and there, he’d get in the Villa side.

Gabby did ok too. Setting up Crouch’s first goal and then getting a strike in a bit later on. A shame really that the rest of the team were fairly lacklustre in that first half as Crouch did sod all off the ball but gets himself in the Managers eyeline by tapping home two goals. Gabby ran hard but didn’t get the ball a great deal. Bridge and Barry were poor. Wright-Phillips scored but was sensationally useless, I think he’s so over-rated it’s unbelievable. Fat Frank, apart from his goals is another who is over-rated, that said, a guaranteed 20 goals a season is pretty good for a midfielder. Glen Johnson, great going forward, can’t defend. England will not win the World Cup. There. I said it.

Back to Villa. Shame the international break came when it did as we were just getting settled again after the poor defeat to Blackburn. A half decent performance against Fat bums Man City side. Chelsea is a stiff test.

  2. OR…Barry played well first half and indeed did okay second half. Wright-Phillips while he is not a left winger did reasonably well, though it smacks of Capello rating Milner as a better prospect on the left having given SWP the chance to impress where Milner already had coming on 1-0 down in a game that mattered on saturday. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Gabby is lazy. When he doesn’t have the ball he stands still. I love the guy and think he can be a real weapon when he’s improved his finishing in the prem but he has to put more effort in consistently.

His cross for the goal was a joke and turned out to be lucky and his shot on goal, while it was a decent shot, it was after some hesitation when he received the ball. He could have exploded forward and had a pop but instead he stood still, waited, moved forward slowly and somehow got the ball on target when the defender should have done better.

That said Foster made one exquisite save but was generally average. Johnson is great going forward but needs to improve communication with whoever’s playing inside him as Rio was left covering him too often. Rio was average though no clangers. Terry was decent. Bridge an average performance though could have offered more options down the flank.

Lampard was quiet but didn’t really put a foot wrong. Lennon did well when on the ball though needs to be a little more disciplined to his position if he is to userp Walcott from that role. Crouch was pretty average but scored two easy tap ins. Could have done better though the service to him was generally useless.

Carlton Cole did okay and would be good to see him and Gabby play 90 mins together but can’t see that happening. Cole and Rooney could be a good partnership.

Overall VERY static performance first half, Beckham livened things up with some classic sweeping passes over 50 yards and Milner did great coming on.

Hope that wasn’t too downbeat – I actually quite enjoyed the game and glad Gabby had a chance to shine.
