Here is a breakdown of the Villa’s best and worst performers in terms of ratings and statistics vs Wolves, with Petrov, Herd and Collins impressing.

Player Ratings

Shay Given – 6.5 – another fairly quiet day at the office after busy debut

Chris Herd – 7.5 – grew into the game well to deal with Jarvis/Hunt threat. Offered in attacking sense and went close. Hugely encouraging

James Collins – 7 – improved distribution, solid when needed but little to do defensively

Richard Dunne – 7 – more involved than Collins at the back. Strong in the air

Stephen Warnock – 6.5 – another decent defensive shift but less involved in attacking sense

Stiliyan Petrov – 7.5 – looked more creative in the centre, slightly more advanced and benefitted

Fabian Delph – 6 – first sign of weakness in the new season. Prone to lunging in. Booked

Charles N’Zogbia – 7 – served as a decent attacking threat. More confident to have a crack

Emile Heskey – 6.5 – worked hard as ever and unlucky with effort in the first half

Gabby Agbonlahor – 7 – looked bright for second game running and caused Stearman plenty of problems

Darren Bent – 6 – very quiet on the day, just 1 shot off target

Subs

Barry Bannan – 6.5 – decent again upon arrival, adds creativity without conceding possession too often

Marc Albrighton – no time
