Aston Villa Birmingham? You can’t help but laugh!

Some people live in a dream world. They say things that make people laugh when they were meant seriously. They think their ideas are feasible, but the rest of the world just rolls round on the floor or shakes their head in disbelief.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby

"Now I may be an idiot, but there is one thing I am not, sir, and that, sir, is an idiot." Mike Whitby

"Now I may be an idiot, but there is one thing I am not, sir, and that, sir, is an idiot." Mike Whitby (or was it Peter Griffin?)

Whitby believes that Aston Villa should change their name to incorporate Birmingham into it, to increase global awareness of the Birmingham ‘brand’. I don’t think it even needs saying why this isn’t feasible, it’s such a ridiculous idea. What it does show you though, is how much football is changing, when we find ourselves in a position that someone thinks it’s possible that we’ll change our historic name of 134 years, in order to help foreign viewers know where we are located easier. Football is becoming more and more a commodity than a sport every day.

“Aston Villa is one of Birmingham’s great institutions and is an international brand that the city is proud of.” Councillor Mike Whitby

Now this statement I can get on board with but the suggestion of us being an advertisement board for the city of Birmingham, I’m not so sure. This is something I am definitely not in favour of and I imagine 99% of Villa fans won’t be either. In fact, I bet 99% of Blues fans don’t like the idea of sharing their name with us either.

…I’ve just had a look around the net and it looks like other bloggers agree with me and think this is a ludicrous idea too. Check these: Vital Football, Villa Banter & The Offside.

What’re your thoughts on this proposition?
