Marc Albrighton has heaped praise on Pires influence on the Villa squad in imparting his wily wisdom;

“He (Pires) is a big influence on the younger players.

“He passes on a lot of tips. He helps the young boys out, in fact, not just the young boys but the whole squad.

“The rest of the lads appreciate what he has done in the game.

“If he is telling you something, it is definitely something to take on board.

“He (Pires) shows touches in training that make you sit back and think ‘that is why he was so good’.

“Against Blackburn, he did it again on the Premier League stage. He has done very well for us.”

Wolves Reserves 3 – 1 Aston Villa Reserves

Villa’s second string slipped off the pace at the top of the reserves league table in their fight for the title with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, who we smashed 10-1 earlier in the campaign. Villa were unable to hold onto a 1-0 half time lead in the away clash against their local rivals after Gary Gardner opened the scoring inside 20 minutes at the second attempt after his close range free-kick was saved. A Geoffrey Mujangi Bia brace saw Wolves overturn the result after Danny Batth had levelled with a header after the break. The game saw run-outs for current misfits Stephen Warnock and Habib Beye but the experienced full-backs were unable to prevent a defensive collapse in the second half.

Secret Behind Villa’s Success: Saturday’s Passing Stats

Aston Villa’s 4-1 win over Blackburn was arguably their best performance of the season, having to go back to the 3-0 opening day win over West Ham to see such an attacking display at Villa Park. However, with the likes of Young and Downing taking the plaudits, the centre midfield partnership of Reo-Coker and Pires saw a competence to keep the ball with some pretty resounding success rate stats. Between the two of them, the duo made 129 passes missing their target on just 6 occasions (3 each) with Reo-Coker making 70/73 passes and Pires completing 53/56 in arguably his best display for the club. I signalled Nigel’s improvements in the passing department a few weeks back after he had received criticism from some sections of the Villa support. The weekend’s display saw his success rate of almost 96%! Pires was just behind his midfield counterpart, proving that he is still technically adept, with a 94.6% success rate! Kudos boys! The best of the rest

Villa Linked to Daniel Sturridge After 4 in 4

The Mirror have reported that Chelsea’s young striker Daniel Sturridge, currently on loan at Bolton, is attracting the eye of Gerard Houllier. This is not the first occasion that the 21-year-old has been linked to Villa Park, with ex-boss Martin O’Neill believed to have been interested in bringing the England Under-21 international to the club when Manchester City failed to tie him down to a contract. Instead, Chelsea stepped in to capture the hot prospect but have utilized him very little since and hence dent him off to join Owen Coyle’s men to gain first team experience. Since the January switch the pacy front man has netted in every one of his 4 appearances for Bolton. Where will Sturridge be next season

This weekend’s man of the match Ashley Young repeated his stance on negotiating a new contract with the club in an interview with the Sun, with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool lurking;

“I have always said I will leave talks until the end of the season and that’s how it is.

“Every time I pull on the shirt I go out to give 110 per cent for Villa.

“I am delighted to be playing in the position I am in, just behind the main striker, and doing well for the team.”

Villa to Lose FxPro Sponsor, Record Annual £37m Loss

February 28, 2011 by · 2 Comments

Please do not take this as me being down beat about the club after a fantastic high-point in the 4-1 win at the weekend, just reporting the recent revelations that FxPro have decided to make use of an apparent clause in the record contract agreed last summer, to pull out of the affiliation early, despite staying on with Fulham. Also the club’s holding company revealed the annual figures for the season ending 2010 over the weekend, posting a £37m loss. However, don’t fear too much as this number has decreased from £46.2m the year previous. The recent figures do not taken into account this seasons transfer dealings, with the Darren Bent deal representing a significant hit financially, but moves away for the likes of Davies, Sidwell and Carew alleviating the club’s wage bill. Pires on Villa’s need to keep star man and yesterday’s man of the match, Ashley Young;

“When you see Ashley play like that, it shows how important it is for Villa to keep him. Ashley is a very good player who plays for the national team.”

“He is very important here, the fans love him, but you know what football is like.

“I don’t know what is happening with Ashley but for me, he should stay at Villa.” Albrighton’s Echoed Sentiments

Villa vs Rovers Report and Player Ratings

Aston Villa climbed to the dizzying heights of 12th yesterday with an emphatic second half display which produced 5 goal in total, 4 of which went to the home side after a good first half performance saw Villa thwarted on numerous occasions by Rovers keeper Paul Robinson. An early second half penalty, won and converted by Ashley Young after a clumsy challenge by Keith Andrews set up the hosts romp to victory. Houllier’s sides second came courtesy of the shin of Blackburn defender Grant Hadley from a low Marc Albrighton cross and Villa effectively sealed the win minutes later when Downing raced clear before coolly dispatching past Robinson. Rovers pulled one back from substitute Kalinic whose record against the Villans made it strange that he was only used in a cameo role. The Croat’s long range effort deflected off Dunne, looping over the hapless Friedel to spoil a decent defensive display against a very poor Blackburn side. However, stand-in captain Young capped off a man of the match display with a second goal of the game, firing in from 10-yards after a Downing lay-off. Fantastic result and a performance to match all-in-all, vastly improving Villa’s dismal goal difference. Match Report and Player Ratings

Villa Pre-Match Predictions: Your Thoughts

Filed under: Pre-Match Predictions

I want to know who you think will play against Blackburn today, bearing in mind that Luke Young, Carlos Cuellar, James Collins and Jean Makoun are all definitely out. Will Petrov come straight back in or will Barry Bannan pick up where he left off against Rovers last month. With Collins and Cuellar both out, one would suggest Clark will move into the middle alongside Dunne so does that mean a possible unlikely return against his old club for Stephen Warnock or will youngster Nathan Baker pip him to the post having returned from suspension after being sent off against, you guessed it, Blakcburn. The game is incredibly the 9th in the last two seasons between the clubs with Rovers league record overshadowing Villa’s cup successes of late, so what will be the score? Also, the next Villa player to score at Villa Park will net the 500th league goal in the league at our holy home, so who will it be? To see my pre-match predictions click here
